Miyabi is still The One

by wu-san

If I’m not careful, the delightful legs of Chii will surely over power me in ways I can only ever dream of. So let’s check out what Miya’s got to offer me. She is after all my number one Berryz. It would, by all intents an purposes, be obsurd not to want to delve into some sort of unhealthy obsession over her. Lets see if we can make something happen.

Well, to be honest her Wiki.theppn.org page is a waste of time. Maybe I’m just not feeling it, whatever that should come to mean, but for some reason I find her profile so very uninteresting. To be honest I only raised an eyebrow at her being scared of monsters and cockroaches. But then, you’d be some crazy bastard if you found monsters a bit of a laugh, and cockroaches a bloody good time. Really, there’s nothing excitable about that. Like Chii, Miya’s easy to anger, although she differs by being a little shy. On the one hand, groping a shy girl is pretty damn sexy. On the other hand though, she might just stab you. I guess not knowing which reaction you’d get is a bit of a turn on, although somewhat dangerous.

Apparently her charm point is her small ears. What? Has she felt up her chin lately? It’s a pretty epic piece of biology, that thing. An architect needs to blueprint her face for something magical, because somehow I want a house in the shape of it. I’d have slides coming from her nostrils and leading into some sort of underground weapons factory. Although it’d produce weapons that shoot out rainbows or something. The world’s full of bullets already. What we need are love rainbows. Miya ones.

Moving onto her recent B.L.T U-17 questionare though, it’s a little more interesting and current. It looks like Miya’s confidence is growing somewhat, what with her declaring she has no weaknesses. Now that’s what I like to see in my girls. A little bit of fight. Not enough to scare me off, but enough to curb or contradict that alluring shyness she reckons she possesses. Apparently she’s also feminine and sometimes cool. Well that’s definitely a bit of win. I cant ever see butch, manly women being my kind of thing in all honesty, so it’s good news that Miya’s a pansy at heart.

Get this: she was 6 when she had her first love! When I was six I was wetting the bed and blaming it on aliens. Can you form crushes at 6? I’m deadly curious now. I think my first crush was at 10, and I guess you’d consider this as being a late bloomer then? Hmmmm. There’s more on the questionnaire and I admit that I pilfered through a lot of the answers, but there’s certainly room for Miya to cement her place at the top of my Berryz Koubou ranking list. I guess I’m going to have to work at it some more though, because Chii’s dangerously close with her being damn right bumpylicious.

With Miya, she’s like the Kamei of BK for me. On my side of things I want to share romantic situations with her. Whereas Chii is kind of a dirty thing for me right now. To be honest the former is a lot more important for me, regardless of my filthy mouth sometimes, and so I suspect that Miya’s going to stick around for a long while to come.

Cheering for Chii~

by wu-san

Well, my progression into the land of Berryz Koubou has really, really taken a back seat to almost everything else H!P related, and indeed anything J-pop related. Oh dear. Still, there’s always something to ramble on about, as pointless as it may be.

Now, I realise that Berryz Koubou are worth the trouble of obsessing over, yet I just cant seem to ground myself into a good, unhealthy amount of fixating yet. I’m sure it’ll come once I get off of my ass, and there was a brief period where I crammed over much of BK’s discography for, well, for a week, but right now I’m using my time for other things. Chinami, where’s your Photobook already? That ought to do it. And then some.

1

You shouldn’t dare expect thoughtful writing on my trying to obsess over BK, you must know that. We’re at the beginning here, where I’m purely driven on my sex-drive. It’s primitive, sure, but then nothing else has captivated me just yet. Wait, apart from a b-side…and Chinami. I know Miya rated first on my member rankings and that still sticks, but sometimes you get horny, and anything after that is only ever Chinami. You know I’m right. Catch me on a day when I’m swearing metaphors at you like some bastard poet and things change just a little, but right now it’s pretty damn evident that I’ve reverted to being a pervert.

Clearly I want to talk about Chinami some more, so lets just write what comes naturally. Obviously, this series of mine has no real structure, and I love it.

Chinami:

There’s no doubting that I’ve got wiki.theppn.org open right now, right on Chinami’s page. It’s the only way to learn about future I cant stop thinking about you idol crushes. Well, not always. You should see how shit AAA’s pages are. Great, Nissy, I know when you were born. Now how do you like your coffee in the morning? Which side of the bed do you want? And the rest please.

2

Apparently, Chinami sleeps with her eyes half open. Not that I’d ever get to experience this rather bizarre quirk of sorts, I can still imagine. It’s pretty terrifying, and I can imagine that it’d look absolutely hideous. I mean, she’s in a sloth, vegetable state, and there she is gawking at you, or something. I couldn’t sleep next to that, I’m sorry. It’s the pillow cover for you Chii. With the nose shapes cut out for breathing so you don’t die. I’m not ready to do jail time just yet. I’m saving that for the knife fight my friend and I are going to have in the future, by a mountain range boasting a waterfall. We’ve already predicted that I loose though. So unless they want to haul my corpse into a cell, wait…what am I going on about now?

3

Also, Chii’s supposed to get mad straight away when she doesn’t like something. Great. I’ve been saving a lot of bad jokes for someone. And when I go in for a grope she can tell me she’s not happy with my dirty ways, and then it’ll be too late by then. Security will be punching me in the face but my arms will still be caressing as best they can until they fall off or something. Still, what’s Chii’s meat to bone ratio? – oh god, I should really phrase that better – could you seriously get a good cuddle with her? I mean you just know you could engulf yourself with JunJun, and it’d be like some magical cushion with boobs and legs and face and bum cheeks. Could Chii boast such an awesome hug? Don’t ask how I got from getting mad to groping.

4

Oh, she doesn’t like mushrooms. I’d love to chase her down the street throwing mushrooms at her from my wicker basket full of mushrooms, in a giant, oversized, comically misguided mushroom suit. I personally love mushrooms myself, and have even been known to take them raw. I wonder how this would effect our imaginary relationship, which so far consists of pillowcase wearing of the head when sleeping, groping and mushroom suits.

Chii likes badminton. Superb! I love badminton. She hates ice-skating. Me too! We have so much in common. We can hit a shuttle cock about together whilst we talk nasty about people who like the ice, clearly morose about it because we’re both shit at it. Maybe we can go to a rink and throw potatoes at them, like little trolls or something. We’d make good, evil, potato wielding trolls I think. What do you think?

5

There’s more on there, mostly standard fare. The fact that I’m twisting simple things into stupid things is evidence of that, really. But she seems fun enough. So yes, I’d like to be her boyfriend please.

Man, can someone update her details though? They’re dated to 2004. I’m hoping her hobbies are now in fact dreaming about wu-san. You never bloody know, do you?

I wonder if Zush will post this? It’s a tad ridiculous.

Wu-san’s Berryz Koubou Ranking.

by wu-san

I’m back writing for Zush, is basically what this is. I couldn’t be happier in all honesty. This place used to be a great hangout for sure, and I miss it. Speaking solely for the forum, I made many good net friends on here, and many sadly have moved on to other things. Life has a way of, well, getting in the way. I haven’t been on the forum myself for a good few months either. Bummer.

Anyway, I’m back and hopefully Zush will be also, in some not too distant future. I know his ‘Berryz Kobo International blog’ is doing well to find it’s feet, and that’s fantastic.

Speaking of Berryz Koubou then, I’m going to attempt a blog post on them. Considering I know very little – still – about the group, this should be interesting. Perhaps for the wrong reasons. Anyway, it’s an excuse to study up on my BK in the up and coming months.

I suppose I should start with my members ranking. Don’t expect anything substantial though, I mean, I make it a mission not to take notice of Yurina. Not the best of starts.

1. Miyabi

1. Miyabi – I call her ‘MiMi’, and I have no idea if it’s an accepted nickname already, but it’s pretty cute I think. Reminds me of something cuddly but sexy and, well, just plain sexy. Funnily, I don’t think of Miyabi as physically all that attractive. She’s got a long face which is just terrifying really. When her hair isn’t going all mental the proportions seem less odd however, and just like an old school friend who had a massive chin worthy of it’s own fan club, once he started to grow a little, the rest of his face compensated for his awkward looking noggin. He still looks like a douche though, whereas Miyabi is just, Mimi. Wonderful.

After watching a few – two – DVD magazines, I knew Miyabi was my number one straight away. She was laid back, considerate as an idol, and just genuinely easy to get on with. At least that’s how I‘m guessing. I love it when she gets all flustered and appears awkward. Simply, I find that very attractive. She’s up at the top because I can see myself dating her. She’d make me very happy anyway. You kind of see how my fandom works here. There you have it. Miyabi rocks my socks, and Zush will say ‘I told you so’.

2. Chinami

2. Chinami – She’s just awesome really. A bit of a comedian and always willing to talk and host and jive and, everything. A real dynamic quality about her, for sure. She’s got an awkward look about her too, and sometimes she looks completely away from herself which I find odd, but certainly interesting.

I find her very physically appealing. Very, very much so. Her squinty smile should be a little off-putting, especially when she bites her lips with her teeth, but I just love it. Her voice is something I cant begin to comprehend either. Clearly, I have no idea what I’m on about, which was always part of the fun with my learning about Morning Musume.

3. Saki

3. Saki – Adorable, this girl. I love how she wears her hair, and whilst it’s nothing beyond conventional, much like her looks actually, I totally dig it. A leader who I’ve yet to see do anything. I’m willing to wait around on this one. Beyond that, you’ll find no other reason for my liking her at this point.

4. Momoko

4. Momoko – Cute, and deceptively good at singing – to a point – Momo is always going to be hard to ignore. The end. For now.

5. Risako

5. Risako – My mother would adore Rii to no end. I just know it. That strangely means a lot to me, and I’ve let my mind wonder into the land of dreams on that one. My mother passing down anecdotes to Rii of my childhood whilst they go about bonding over some home made cooking. Anyway, Rii’s got old fashioned looks – and a mushroom nose – which my mother would want me to marry into. I think she’s trying to get ‘her’ perfect grandchildren you see. Probably wouldn’t work out too well if I had my way and started dating OG’s Mika. Ha! Yes, I’m the Mika fan club. Just me.

I really hate Rii’s singing voice. Not to say she cant sing of course, but I just don’t like the tone. I still cant believe she was born in 1994. I mean, what the hell? That’s certainly more dangerous than Momusu’s Aika. She’s at 5 because although I could grow to love her, I’m not there yet. Not by a long shot.

6. Maasa

6. Maasa – I don’t like her.

7. Yurina

7. Yurina – This is actually very bizarre. She reminds me of an old friend back in Malaysia. I haven’t seen her since forever, of course, and who knows what the hell she’s up to now. All I know is, I really, really liked my friend back in Malaysia, and whilst any memory of her is of only a few, they’re vivid and slightly hallowing. Yurina looks like her, quite a bit actually. I just don’t want go there to be honest. It’s totally unfair on Yurina, but god . . . I just don’t want to go there.

There you have it. My rankings. Simple and akin back to my blogging style back in 2005. I guess this is how I write when I don’t know what the f*** I’m talking about. Fun times.

Nono – Just enjoy life

by wu-san

Beyond the politics of the music industry and the importance of keeping face in a society where image is everything, Nono falling in love and getting married shouldn’t cause too much concern. Being a pregnant idol at nineteen will always have us talking under our breath. But fans who see Nono as the person and not the idol with sympathize and congratulate her. If she really is very much in love and of course, wanting the baby then, well, I’m on board. On a more cynical note, having a child out of wedlock will always be frowned upon in Japan. Despite the emotional and subsequent rationality and sympathy of a nation which has seen those areas evolve into a more relaxed set of principles, I hope the marriage is genuine. As an Icon, there must be mountain of pressure placed upon her to do the supposed ‘right thing’. But after witnessing Kago’s recent activities, I’d say Nono is more than capable of holding her own opinion and voicing it with authority. She more than anyone in H!P would’ve gone through the motions with Kago. Even if it was only in spirit. It’s what close friends do.

1

I don’t see why UFA want to distance themselves from the issue by sounding against it. Even the most obsessive fan holding a fandom going way beyond selfishness cant be that upset. If we believe Nono to stay single and child free for the remainder of her career as a J-pop star, I’d much rather she give it up and try to attain some sort of ‘normal’ life. Nono isn’t a 12 year old newcomer anymore. There’s no need for her to remain padlocked from the world in order to remain ‘perfect’ for greedy fans to glare at. So we can’t have her to ourselves, that doesn’t mean no one else should. Mr Ultraman (as I’ll call him) seems to have won her heart. Shouldn’t we all be happy? So are UFA right to talk unsympathetically about the situation? Only if fans are really against it. Damage limitation right? My answer to that is, fans, stop being bastards. Of course there are a huge number of people who understand that Nono has a life outside of J-pop and are fine with it. These are the people who will support her and continue to buy her records (as long as they’re good of course). If UFA are worried about the drop in sales then it certainly gives out a negative impression of H!P fans. I’d like to think they’d give us a little more credit to be honest.

I’m glad Tsunku has been a lot more farther-like about the situation. He has every right to do so. It would seem he’s happy for Nono which I think is great. Surely that should be the status quo. Anyway, for that I’ll be Tsunku’s best friend. And if that all works out maybe I can throw a few suggestions his way. I’m thinking of a new unit with me, Mikitty, Eri Kamei, Sayu and Reina.

2

Ahem…anyway

I’m not really that bothered by the news to be honest but I thought this would save me posting a huge rant on the forum. I am of course delighted for Nono if all that’s happening to her is what she really wants – the marriage, the baby and Mr. Ultraman. If enough of us think like that then I don’t think there’s any real problem or that it should be a big deal. Any thoughts of her coming back to H!P when she’s settled after having the baby should be met with normality.

Mind you, as much as we’d miss her from H!P I don’t think it’d be disastrous if she left the music industry for good. I’m not particularly taken with the new unit she’s in. One word, “Gimmick”. But I’m sure people will tell me that we need to see what they can do first. Will we get that chance? Don’t get me wrong, I really like Nono. However, I’d say becoming a wife and mother is far more important than worrying about one’s idol status. I can take a lot of comfort from that because I know that’s what Nono would be thinking. I’d even like to suggest that Tsunku would be thinking the same thing to. For some reason that turns me on. Anyway I know the great man himself has to act relatively conservative about the matter and I can only work with what I read from others and speculate. A Tsunku I can sympathise with? Hmmmm. What on earth is going on?

3

If Nono is indeed fired by UFA then so be it. It might be good for her. She could always be picked up by another agency somewhere down the line. I’d personally welcome the idea if it was on the cards. Although teaming up with Aibon would come across as a little contrived. Even being with the same company doesn’t feel right. But the two could always hook up for one off singles or a special album here and there. Whether two opposing agencies will allow this type of thing is a whole different matter though.

It’s early in the morning and my eyes are about to drop out. Not sure how well this reads as a result. But meh! I’m not really making a fuss. Fits my mood on the whole Nono situation – I have some thoughts on the matter but I’m not exactly moved to tears. Nono’s happiness is what matters at the end of the day. That’s all I really care about. Looking passed that, yeah whatever.

Now Tsunku. About that unit I mentioned earlier, the one that included me…

4

P.S Many thanks go out to all the bloggers who’ve helped bring the news to our attention. I don’t know about you but without them I’d be lost.

Taka-san ‘Dancing Queen’ and for good measure, the right way to host a show

by wu-san

Recently, my body has taken flight more often than I’d usually allow. I guess it comes with my self-affirmation to the wonders of Jpop recently. I’ve always enjoyed my time in Japanese popular music, but only now do I really ‘love it’. The sad thing is I can feel a bias breathing down my neck every time I write on the subject. However, I’m always proud to commit a line of thought which goes a little like this ‘To truly love something, you must first understand and accept its flaws’. Now, if I had a little more time on my hands (I have an appointment with my local pub very soon) and if I was a little more creative with my wording, I’m sure it would read a lot more romantically. But for now, that poorly constructed sentence of what-not will have to do. As long as you get the point I think we’ll be ok.

A week of self-observation has informed me of my fondness and appreciation for the art of dance. Sometimes the body wants to move, and more recently I’ve not been afraid to let it. Dancing in public is of course ill advised, I’d rather not be beaten up if we’re being honest. But I’ll give my body a good work out if the time is right, though it’s become increasingly difficult to find the ‘right time’ as every situation deserves a dance or ‘get down’ as I like to call it. I usually find the best chances to unleash my moves are when the sun goes down. When I exit from my café it can sometimes be as late as 7pm. By this time the streets of Northampton’s city centre are pretty bare which is inviting for me. It’s as if I’ve got the place to myself, and whilst I have something or other pumping through my headphones, I’m not afraid to jump onto this and that, dancing my way up and around telephone booths, lampposts, seating areas; you name it, I’ve probably danced with it. I know I know, it all sounds incredibly silly and dare I say camp? But it’s truly fun, wonderful even. One thing I take fondly from Jpop is its sense of ‘good will’, being able to uplift with a certain craftsmanship any other industry would struggle with. I’m not here to debate with you the quality of individual artists or their music, instead stating how well Jpop is (in general) at delivering the goods.

Whilst I’ve been dancing away in my student house with moves that are quite frankly scary and bizarre, sometimes not in a good way, I’ve come to realise the fate of one man. This is a man who took dancing by the throat, spat at it, realised how good it can be and hell, joined in on the fun to show us how it should be done. I’m talking about Taka-san of Utaban fame. Never have I applauded a man with so much passion or feeling, and sometimes disgust. I happily endorse his philosophy on dance.

Taka-san, my Idol

There are many moments I could and should pick out but we could be here for quite some time. All I can say at this point is; whatever reminds you of our man in full motion, I want you to stick with it and be happy. For me, I have one very vivid memory in mind.

I’m thinking of the Utaban Love episode. This included the then H!P shuffle units at the time, so we’re talking about the terror of all the ‘Nin Matsuri’ groups. When Taka-san was handed the controls to the ‘Champloo mix’ segment, you knew there were laughs to be had. I was never surprised at Ishibashi-kun’s actions; in fact I thought he restricted himself quite well. I mean, we’ve seen this guy do things where we’ve all thought “Just when he couldn’t get any crazier with famous people”. What I was most impressed with, as I always have been, is his dancing skills. Now, how he’s able to get his body in positions that just don’t seem possible for a man of his stature has always amazed me in one way or another. He obviously can’t dance and he knows it, but there’s always a tireless effort from him. Even when he tries to ‘act’ as if he really doesn’t care, or he suddenly realises how stupid he’s going to inevitably look and feel, when he’s called to the floor to dance he’s always enjoying himself.

Anyway, back to the Utaban episode and as always, Taka-san is a mighty bastard with his handling of the control deck. His job here is to mix up and randomise, in a fashion, the playing of H!P songs. Whatever track is put on, the members from the group in question must hurry out and dance for a period of time until the next song is up. Of course with the Utaban duo it’s never as simple as that. Taka-san begins to omit two of the shuffle units out of the equation. Following a running theme in the episode, 3 Nin Matsuri are chosen as Ishibashi-kun’s favourites. The first few plays represent this beautifully; they’re all ‘Chu! Natsu Party’. At first everything is standard fare. On Chu! Natsu Party’s second play however, the delights of Taka-san’s dancing career with H!P starts to take over. The camera sees 3 Nin Matsuri take the stage once again, as Ayaya looks to the left of our screen something is amiss. Give it a second or two and everything is explained, well, put into context…of a sort. Watching our man unleash his own version of the song is awe-inspiring.

The whole situation is fundamentally ridiculous, a middle aged man placing himself with a host of Idols in this way, it’s more than unusual. However, this sort of thing is great to see on many levels of enjoyment. Not only does it represent the close and comfortable relationship H!P and Utaban undoubtedly had, it also helps to institutionalise a belief that being in the Jpop industry can and should be fun.

With the people Utaban get on with, there’s a sense that the proper way or appropriate ‘decorum’ a host should show to his or her guest is simply seen as void. There’s certainly a less formal appeal to it all. We not only see the hosts as real people, but also their guests. It breaks whatever fantasy or expectation we may have had on an Idol and grounds them and us into a more realistic approach on how we should view Idolism. Of course the fantasy still exists for us, if not for them, its half of the appeal right? it’s one reason why we hold them in such high regard. However, Utaban’s tactics allow their guests to feel a little more at home, even if it means scaring the shit out of them. Taka-san and Nakai-kun treat H!P as people, thats the fundimental factor. The return on this is clear for all to see. It may seem rude of our hosts but it really isn’t. I think it’s a higher level of respect than most shows would care to deliver.

Hosts who can’t cross that line, who can only ever gage their guests through impersonal, formal exchanges are not true hosts in my eyes. It’s the ones who can form friendships, or at the very least, closer bonds with their guests, these are the people doing their jobs right. It certainly feels less false or fictional when both our hosts are willing to point out and critise something that may seem a little off or stupid. These would usually be details dismissed by others. We therefore Trust Ishibashi-kun’s and Nakai-kun’s insight and judgement. Without going to far into it, as this is more about Taka-san’s dancing (and mine lol), lets just say it makes for a better show. At the end of the day any chance to see our Idols as people is surely a healthy thing for them and us.

Well, as the segment progresses Taka-san finally decides to include the other members of H!P. Truthfully, it takes the hindsight of Nakai-kun to take control of the situation. Although it should be noted, Nakai-kun detoured from his duty for a short while, getting himself involved with all the 3 Nin Matsuri action also. Just when you think our dancing guru has had enough ‘Summer Reggae! Rainbow’ gets its second play. Our hero begins to the floor and to this day, I’m still stunned by the syle of Taka-san’s moves. There’s so much emotion in his body, yet so little talent. The songs keep coming and Taka-san just keeps getting better and better. He’d certainly make an interesting alternative if he ever decided to become an Idol.

The Ishibashi-kun philosophy

When I’m dancing in my kitchen, waiting for my food to cook in the microwave, I can see how ridiculous I look in the window. But I really don’t care, I don’t take it seriously and it really is just a bit of fun. I hope I’m doing Taka-san proud because it’s not about how well you can dance, it’s about how much fun you’re having. I think if he had a philosophy on the subject it would go a little like that. Although I’m sure if I called him a bad dancer he’d never speak to me again.

Just a little bit of Mikitty memories..and my two favourite b!ӣ$%^

by wu-san

After falling in love with Miki Fujimoto (again) this week, I’ll share with you one of my favourite Mikitty moments.

Like almost everything I label ‘a classic moment’ it involves those two bastards from Utaban, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The episode I’m talking about is the 2003 Christmas special where current MM hogged the spotlight, of course. The first part is truly enjoyable, where Taka-san becomes utterly pissed off with Kame-chan’s ‘style’ of jokes. How he gets himself so animated is a mystery to me, but damn it’s good. Rika delights us with another gripping yet hilarious story which, as always, turns out to be bloody awful but I guess that’s the point. An interesting talk about Mikitty is discussed at the start of MM’s time slot involving ‘rearranging her underwear’. Now, I rarely speak out of line when it comes to Morning Musume but I fear anything I say about Mikitty on the subject would just come out wrong.

Miki

So, swiftly moving on…

Mikitty really shines near the end, and thanks to Taka-san’s undoubted favouritism we rarely miss anything. T.a.t.u, anyone remember that god awful Russian pop duo? Anyway the girls are asked to plot out on a world map where they’re from. I really hope some of the answers were deliberate, otherwise MM’s geography is at a standard that, well I don’t even want to think about it. The fact that both Taka-san and Nakai-kun are more often than not on the floor in stitches then making any sense whatsoever, you know it’s a good episode. Hell, Taka-san even drooled for a moment and both hosts spontaneously combusted into Kame-chan joke territory. Everyone you expect to get their answer right does and as for the rest, god help them, I really mean that. Tsuji’s answer is classical, her delivery on saying Beijing is both Kawaii and utterly ridiculous, especially when you see where she plotted it on her map. But in a segment where stupid answers are the norm, I guess it’s nothing too exciting.

When MM are set the task to plot T.a.t.u’s whereabouts Mikitty instantly asks ‘which way is up’ holding her world map board. Well, this being a very creative question, Taka-san quickly takes hold of the situation, first by gasping in amazement and then by joining in with his other half to declare “up or down, it’s up to you”. Now that Mikitty has thrown herself into the firing line, it of course sparks off more interesting events. Taka-san goes on to ask her to include the equator line (which I guess isn’t asking much, at least that’s what we think) and also to place in the IDL line. Whilst Mikitty replies “How do you want me to show this ‘equator’?” when she first pauses to think about what an equator might be she is truly beyond sweet and endearing. It’s not the fact that she’s hopeless at anything regarding geography, it’s how she expresses it. There’s pensiveness, a naivety to it all. And whilst I love her evil side, her fun side is just as good.

Miki

Well as you might guess her answer is left till the end and the results are beyond anything I can comprehend. Ok, the equator line was close and the IDL line? Who the hell knows where that is? Maybe it’s just me. The fact that she has no Idea where Russia is becomes meaningless when you realise one important factor, she’s got the map upside down…

This was never really about T.a.t.u but MM’s terrible grasp of basic geography. There’s nothing else I need to say apart from “Mikitty I’ve missed you”.

Discussing Yossie and a battle cry, will television listen?

by wu-san

Quick thoughts on Yossie

The New Year is yet to blossom, but we’ve already been hit with the news that Hitomi Yoshizawa, Morning Musume group leader, shall be stepping down later on in the year. Though my initial reaction was that of shock, it’s really nothing to get worked up about. She’s fought it out like a trooper over the years, it’s time for her to collect her medals of honour and, well, retire. Not quite, it seems Yossie will stay on in H!P after her graduation. I can’t quite see her as a soloist myself, though her voice is decent enough it’s nothing special. Even her ‘tomboy’ attitude has taken a backseat and following in the footsteps of Morning Musume itself, become a rather boring affair. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of Yossie but really, she hasn’t exactly dazzled us with anything lately. I’m not blaming her at all but rather stating how boring MM have been in general. Who knows what Yossie will do after? I’m sure many will speculate and many already have, it’s not for me to say.

Nacchi & Yossie

Whilst I’m upset at the prospect of Yossie leaving MM she deserves a break. Her weight fluctuations over the years are a good sign of the stress she’s felt as an Idol. I won’t begin to go into the details of why this may be; it could be very simple or equally as complicated. So labelling the problem ‘the pressures of fame’ is an easy enough escape clause to use. Last year was a rather rocky time for H!P’s mother ship and it showed. Although most of the defeatist opinions came from fans and not H!P headquarters, it’s the fans that keep Tsunku’s capital healthy. So these voices should be taken seriously, if the shoe fits, I think we all agree it does.

Anyway, it’s a new year and another 12 months for Morning Musume to bring everything back to the boil. I think we all see the arrival of Aika as a sign of hope, she’s got expectations on her shoulders and we’re all guilty of putting those expectations there. I think if the tide starts to move with MM we could see a very good year for the newest addition. I would have liked Yossie to stay on, at least until Morning Musume are a little more grounded and stable. Even if she’s just sitting in the background she’s always a welcome and familiar face to see, and I think we all feel as if a part of MM’s past is with us when she’s around. That’s what you get if you hang around long enough. But pleading for her to stay is pretty selfish, like I said, she needs a break. Still, the timing of her graduation still leaves me a bit puzzled. With Aika coming in I would have thought Yossie leaving at the end of 2006 or the beginning of 2007 would have been better suited for the fairytale ‘fresh new start’ angle. And for the die hard Yossie fans out there, maybe even the end of this year.

What I hope to see from the media

Aika’s maiden appearance on Utaban is something I am looking forward to. Even though the relationship between both camps has been hit and miss with recent MM the love is still there, it just needs to be reawakened (I tried to tackle the issue in an earlier blog, emphasis on ‘tried’). Let’s hope Taka-san will take her on as one of the Idols he wants to date when they turn ‘20’ (that was always a funny angle). Apart from his loyalty to Mikitty, the only palatable member left in MM for the feisty host is Sayu in my opinion and frankly, I think they scare each other. Hell, Sayu could always try and win over Nakai-kun as it’s always great to piss him off.

Aika with girls

Downtown of Hey Hey Hey can just keep doing their thing, maybe more regularly than recently. Though it has to be said, they’re a little ‘hands on’ sometimes and whilst it’s not always physical abuse, these guys can be pretty scary. TV spots like Dokyu and Futarigoto were always welcome. Though it’s fair to say some were more interesting than others, down to who was on it if we’re being honest. Do we need another round of these spots right now? Probably not, but fans won’t care about that. I’m sad to say the days of Mari crunching on ice for twenty odd minutes has long gone, but I’m sure there’s enough interesting things to talk about and do, or not do on Dokyu or Futarigoto. There are other shows and such out there like ‘Fun’ for example who I’d like to see get their hands dirty again. As for Hello! Mornings, I get the feeling standards are dropping in that department to. I’m still waiting for Taka-san to appear on the show. Maybe it’s best for everyone if that never materialises ;)

What am I asking for exactly? Just a little more effort from everyone involved. The situation is rarely as bad as we’d like to think, up until headquarters and sales statistics tell us otherwise. I personally think the situation right now is in the middle of speculation and fact. I recently listened to a radio rip of MM’s 10 th anniversary single and was thankfully thrilled by it. It’s not perfect by any means but it sways in the right direction. I like to use the term ‘grass roots’ as it seems more familiar to past MM releases than it does newer ones. That’s a very quick round up of the single, but it’s not a review so forgive my poor explanation. On the whole though, it’s a great single to start off MM’s year.

So whilst I sit and wait to see how the year unfolds for H!P’s catalogue of groups and projects, I’ll be hoping for the best. It’s the least we can do right?

[Note: Wu-San wrote this blog before those very sad news of Yossie's brother hit us.]
