Those precious moments – part 2

by wu-san

I remember holding a book so decadent, the warn away edges and the dog-eared pages seemed to melt away in my hands. The local library stocked a curious bunch of Korean texts. Some were old – like the one in my grasp – and some were relatively new. I returned the book to it’s original spot and continued to the other side of the shelf. A stash of magazines lay awkwardly, jig-sawing their spines into a rather ambitious mountain. I gathered as many as I could, carrying them to the nearest table.

The magazines were slightly off colour, having faded in the sun. I clasped the first one gently, as if it were a curio, some undiscovered treasure foreign to me. It was, of course. I can’t read Korean. But a picture translates more easily. Boundless beautiful smiles from beautiful faces stared at me from every page. Various personalities dressed to the height of the vogue consensus. These magazines were the who’s-who in Korean popular culture. They also included sections on the western and asian music scene.

Morning Musume

When I reached an issue dating back to 2000, I was confronted with a pleasant surprise. A few articles in, ten Japanese girls caught my gaze. ‘I WISH’ sat on the page in big Romanized letters. A warmth filled my body, tenderising my heart, softening my face and tightening my stomach. I remembered what it felt like to fall in love with Morning Musume all over again. A feeling that can only come with time. A longing that can only surface with hindsight. Like a man trying to recapture his past through whisky bottles and old photo albums, I was drunk on nostalgia. It felt good. Really good, if ultimately unrewarding.

Morning Musume

When I read Zush’s post I could sense the same kind of empathy. So much so, I had to write down this small account. In fact I laughed into the seat of my chair when he wrote the words ‘we two old timers chatting on various H!P things’. I imagine us sitting in a bar with a few beers in our hands, smiling at the ceiling, picking at the labels on our bottles, sighing through our melancholy faces every time we finish a sentence. Morning Musume has a way of making you feel old, and this brings with it a naivety – the innocence of youth, envying it in old age. I can’t help but feel that this topic is going to make Zush and I feel very, very old.

Morning Musume

I searched through my archives after reading Zush’s post and watched the ‘I WISH’ PV a fair few times. I guess this song was ahead of its time. One for the future. Because when I first heard it I didn’t quite get it. Now further down the line with a better knowledge of Morning Musume’s history, the song’s sentimentality echo’s like a fond memory.

Those precious moments – part 1

by Zush

Introduction:
This is going to be a face to face type interactive blog between Wu and me. We two old timers chatting on various H!P related things. There is no clear goal or settled subjects. We just do our blog entries in turns and only time tells where this conversation leads. So let’s… Starto!

I WISH

I experienced Morning Musume awakening in the year 1999 when I saw Love Machine PV. Gosh, I’m almost shocked when I start to think it now. Exactly eight years has now passed by. Love Machine got me ultimately into J-pop. No return ticket. Although I listen to wide range of J-pop and J-rock Morning Musume has always stayed in my heart as that “one and only”. Until these days, but that’s another story.

I WISH

Love Machine is certainly MM classic, great J-pop dance beat, great line-up, Maki just joined the group and 1st gen member Aya Ishiguro still there but leaving soon. But Love Machine is not my all time favorite MM song. And when I’m now talking about that precious one, it’s not only the song but strongly with it goes PV’s long version. Sound and scene! Together so deeply touching experience that I guess I’m always having tears when watching that video tale.

I WISH

The song itself is a love song: “life is wonderful / meeting someone / falling in love / ah how wonderful / it’s like a dream / you can laugh and cry about it”. But the PV takes it to another dimension telling a story about small village girls, people living there quite ordinary life and how importat friendship is in our lives.

I WISH

The song is of course I WISH and the scene is village’s plaza where old friends meet. Yuko, Kaori, Nacchi, Kei, Mari, Maki and almost fresh 4th gen MM members Rika, Hitomi, Aibon & Nono. They are all there laughing, singing and dancing. Girls have double roles: Besides village girls they play also grown up villagers. Maki for example is a policeman and Nono sells hot dogs. It’s kind of mini drama, happy play that has also tiny melancholy undertones.

I WISH

“… we have clear days / we have rainy days too / someday you’ll understand it all”

I WISH

I WISH was released in September 2000. Before it came out Happy Summer Wedding and after I WISH was published Renai Revolution 21. What can I say? All outstanding MM songs.

Review: The Best of Mihimaru GT (Album)

by Miwa

Honestly, I just became Mihimaru GT’s fan since few months ago. I never thought I would love them at first time I saw their picture. But I did.

mihimaru GT

I began loving them since the first time I heard their “Kakegae no Nai Uta (かけがえのない詩)” song performed on the Music Station. And I’m such a big fan of Doraemon since my childhood. Well, recently, I just purchased their “The Best of Mihimaru GT” album. Well, I know I’m late, but yeah, I’d like to review this album anyway.

1. Theme of mihimaLIVE
Actually, this is the first time I get interested with an album opening track lol. This song is pretty good, and I love how it sounds. I like the hip-hopish tune in this song.

2. Love is…
This is my 2nd favorite single of theirs! I love the chorus, specially. And Hiroko’s voice is really beautiful on this song.

3. Yurume no Lady (ユルメのレイデ)
I like the oriental tune on the beginning of this song. The PV is good. But I don’t really like Hiroko’s rapping tho. She sounds kinda weird when she’s rapping. But I love this song anyway (it’s specially because of Miyake’s rap.

4. Itsumademo Hibiku Kono Melody (いつまでも響くこのmelody)
This track’s chorus sounds similar with “Love Is…”. But this song has more jazzy feeling on it. And I noticed how Hiroko resembles Mari so much on this song’s PV.

5. Kibun Joujou↑↑ (気分上々↑↑)
Unlike others, this track isn’t my most favorite, because Hiroko’s voice sounds bit irritating on this song. But I like this kind of happy song. And the PV looks very cool too.

6. Punkish☆ (パンキッシュ☆)
Woah, rockish song! Miyake’s rapping sounds really cool on this song. I can’t get the chorus out my mind yet lol. This song is pretty catchy.

7. Koisuru Kimochi (恋する気持ち)
This is probably my 3rd favorite single from theirs (well, notice that I’m more ballad person lol). I love how this song sounds really relaxing and I love Hiroko’s vocal on this song. Her voice sounds really beautiful on this song. And I like this song’s lyrics.

8. YES
This is the c/w song of the “Koisuru Kimochi” single. The beginning of this song reminds me of a christmas song. Well, this is also ballad, but unlike Koisuru Kimochi, this song has some raps on it. But the raps aren’t ruining the song at all! This song is another relaxing track. So far, this is one of my most fav c/w song by them.

9. Sayonara no Uta (さよならのうた)
Another ballad-ish single by them. Not one of my most favorite, but the chorus sounds beautiful.

10. H.P.S.J. -mihimaru Ball MIX-
This is probably my least favorite single of theirs. Because the rapping on this song sounds pretty noisy for my taste lol. But I love this song’s PV!

11. Tsuyoku Tsuyoku (ツヨクツヨク)
I like the summer-y feel on this song! This track has been stayed on my iPod playlist for weeks now. This song sounds really fun track and it’s great to listen to this song while it’s summer!

12. Magical Speaker (マジカルスピーカー)
This is the c/w song of the “Itsumademo Hibiku Kono Melody” single. Not my favorite c/w song, because I forgot this song’s melody so easily after listening. But anyway, this song is okay ^^

mihimaru GT

13. Kakegae no Nai Uta (かけがえのない詩)
Obviously, this is my most favorite single by them! And this song is the reason why I get interested with Mihimaru GT at first time (the second would be Miyake rofl). I just love this song’s tune, lyrics & its PV! This song is still on my iPod playlist even it’s been around 5-6 months. I just love this kind of ballad.

14. Negai ~Negai~ (願~negai~)
Probably my 4th fav single by them. I like this song’s tune! Hiroko’s vocal sounds really beautiful on this song too.

15. Kaerouka -Take 07 (帰ろう歌-TAKE7-)
One of my most favorite single by them. And I like this version better than the original!

16. Yakusoku
This was their debut single. And this song is good! I’m sure I’ve heard this song before, somewhere, but forgot where. Anyway, I like it!

Overall. 9.5/10
I love this album! Probably one of my most favorite j-pop album. I’d highly recommend this album.
